This has been the Summer of Trees. Shortly after we moved into our house we signed on with a grassroots group in our neighborhood dedicated to promoting urban forestry. We all ourselves Montavilla Tree Buds. Cute, huh? Among other projects, the city needed volunteers to inventory street trees (those planted in public rights of way), gleaning information like size, location and type of tree. They'll take all the info and put it in a database available online.
We've given it quite a lot of time, all we could spare from house projects, but it's been fun. We've met a lot of great people and learned a lot about trees. And it's not over yet. We hope to plan some more activities, like workshops on pruning and other tree care.
A successful foray into civic engagement in our new home, overall!
